A more thoughtful way to experience Tanzania

Nakupenda means 'I love you' in Swahili, and this route is for people who love wild places. You leave the main road early and drive through Maasai country to Lake Natron, a pink soda lake under the only active volcano in the Rift Valley. Two nights there give you time for the waterfall, the lake shore and the human footprints at Engare Sero. Then you cross into the Serengeti through the quiet north-east, visit the crater and finish with a night inside Tarangire.

Who this safari is for

Is this the right safari for you?

This safari is for travellers who want adventure and fewer crowds: second-time visitors, couples, active families with teenagers and photographers who want more than the classic loop. You need to be happy with some rough roads and simple lodges at Natron, and a short walk through a river gorge to the waterfall. If you prefer smoother roads and more comfort, our 7-day safari covers the classic parks without Natron.

Day by day

A journey that builds with rhythm, not rush

Day 1

Arrival in Arusha

Karibu Tanzania. Our team meets you at the airport and drives you about an hour to your hotel in Arusha. Your guide talks you through the route, which is less common than our classic safaris, and explains what to pack for the walk to the Natron waterfall. The afternoon is free to rest or walk around town.

Where you sleep: Budget: Gold Crest Hotel · Mid-range: Four Points by Sheraton Arusha · Luxury: Gran Meliá Arusha

Meals: Breakfast

Guide's tip: Pack sandals or water shoes you do not mind getting wet. The walk to the Ngare Sero waterfall crosses the river several times.

Day 2

Lake Natron

After breakfast you leave the tarmac at Mto wa Mbu and drive north on a rough road through Maasai country, about 4 to 5 hours. On the way you pass Engaruka, a ruined stone-age farming settlement, and the great cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai rises ahead. Lake Natron's colours change from pink to red and green thanks to its minerals and the algae that feed the flamingos. You arrive in the afternoon and finish the day with a sundowner overlooking the lake.

Where you sleep: Budget: Lake Natron Tented Camp · Mid-range: Maasai Giraffe Eco Lodge

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Guide's tip: There are no luxury lodges at Natron. The camps are simple and clean; the landscape is the luxury here.

Day 3

Lake Natron

A full day at Lake Natron. In the morning, a local Maasai guide walks you to the lake shore to see the flamingos and the strange salt crusts. Later you walk up the Ngare Sero river gorge to a waterfall where you can swim in a cool pool. You can also visit the human footprints at Engare Sero, left in volcanic mud thousands of years ago. The evening is free, with the volcano glowing pink at sunset.

Where you sleep: Budget: Lake Natron Tented Camp · Mid-range: Maasai Giraffe Eco Lodge

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Guide's tip: Natron is very hot at midday. Do the lake walk early and the waterfall walk in the afternoon, when the gorge is in shade.

Day 4

Serengeti National Park

After breakfast you drive west into the Serengeti through the Klein's gate area, about 5 to 6 hours on a remote road with game viewing on the way. This quiet north-eastern corner of the park sees few other vehicles. You continue into the central Serengeti in the afternoon, where lion, cheetah, elephant and big herds of plains game are common, and arrive at your tented camp for dinner.

Where you sleep: Budget: Into Wild Africa Tented Camp · Mid-range: Arukore Simba Camp · Luxury: Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Guide's tip: This is a long road day. Bring a book or download a podcast for the bumpy stretch before Klein's gate.

Day 5

Serengeti National Park

A full day in the Serengeti with morning and afternoon game drives. Your guide follows the latest sightings: lions on the kopjes, leopards in the trees along the Seronera River and cheetahs on the open plains. From June to October the migration herds are in the western and northern Serengeti, and your guide will tell you if they are close enough for a long drive. Lunch is a picnic or a hot meal at camp.

Where you sleep: Budget: Into Wild Africa Tented Camp · Mid-range: Arukore Simba Camp · Luxury: Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Guide's tip: Sunset at the Serengeti is fast, about 20 minutes. Ask your guide to find a good spot early and switch the engine off.

Day 6

Ngorongoro

After breakfast you drive out of the Serengeti and up to the Ngorongoro highlands, about 3 hours, and descend into the crater for a game drive. The crater floor holds lion, buffalo, elephant, zebra, wildebeest, hyena and the rare black rhino, with flamingos on Lake Magadi. After a picnic lunch you climb back to the rim and drive to Karatu, a green farming area, for the night.

Where you sleep: Budget: Marera Valley Lodge · Mid-range: Ngorongoro Coffee Lodge · Luxury: Ngorongoro Meliá Lodge

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Guide's tip: Many Karatu lodges are working coffee farms. Ask for a short walk through the plantation before dinner.

Day 7

Tarangire National Park

After breakfast you drive about 2 hours to Tarangire National Park for a final full day of game viewing. From June to October Tarangire is at its very best, with huge elephant herds along the river, plus lion, giraffe, zebra and many birds. Tonight you stay inside the park, so your last evening is spent with the sounds of elephants and lions around camp.

Where you sleep: Budget: Tarangire Safari Lodge · Mid-range: Mbali Mbali Tarangire River Camp · Luxury: Tarangire Kuro Treetops Lodge

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Guide's tip: Staying inside the park means you can be on a game drive at dawn tomorrow before the drive to the airport.

Day 8

Departure

After an early game drive and breakfast, you drive about 3 hours to Kilimanjaro Airport for your flight home. We can also arrange a short flight to Zanzibar if you want to add a few days on the beach.

Where you sleep: No overnight: transfer to the airport

Meals: Breakfast

Guide's tip: Leave the dust behind: most Tarangire camps have a quick shower you can use before the airport drive.

It was a unique experience!!

We went on a 5 days Safari in Tanzania. We visit the Serengeti and Ngororo plains, around the Tarangire and Serengeti National Parks & the Ngororo crater. Big boss Antony designed an amazing programme and our guide Peter gave us a unique experience into the wild Africa. His magic eye was able to catch exotic animals, like cheetahs and rhinos, finding the perfect spot in a middle of a vast plain. My only complaint was that I had to go back to work 🤓 Miss you already, guys! What a wonderful adventure !!!

Tony is the Best. 10/10 recommendation plus 5 stars review. He went above and beyond on our trip.

This Past year we visited Tanzania , let me tell you how it went. From the moment our plane touched down, every aspect of our trip was meticulously managed. The airport transfers were seamless, and the selection of hotels and safari lodges provided truly top-tier comfort and amenities. Each accommodation was not only luxurious and well-appointed but also strategically chosen to enhance our overall experience. Tony our guide, consistently went above and beyond to ensure our family felt completely safe, comfortable and well cared for. His extensive knowledge of the wildlife, local culture and terrain was captivating, enriching every game drive and interactions. The entire expedition, from the breathtaking wildlife encounters to the impeccable logistical arrangements, was nothing short of spectacular. We wholeheartedly RECOMMEND Tony and BigfiveTrails to anyone seeking a truly unparalleled and profoundly memorable Tanzanian Safari experience. They deliver excellence in every detail.

He always keeps a smile on his face, ensuring that everyone in the vehicle is enjoying the safari. His vehicle is comfortable, clean, and equipped with air conditioning. Safaris are great, but with Tony, they are something truly special. We are very grateful to Tony.

An unforgettable Tanzania safari with an incredible guide

Our trip to Tanzania with Big Five Trails was absolutely amazing and exceeded our expectations. The itinerary was very well organized and allowed us to experience some of the most beautiful places in the country, with incredible wildlife sightings and unforgettable landscapes. A huge part of what made the trip so special was our guide, Tony. He was simply incredible: professional, friendly, patient and extremely knowledgeable about the animals, nature and Tanzania. He is also an exceptional tracker — it honestly felt as if he had some kind of direct communication with the animals! He had an incredible ability to spot wildlife from a distance, read tracks and signs, and somehow always seemed to know where the animals were going to appear. Thanks to him, we were able to see an amazing variety of wildlife and enjoy some truly unforgettable encounters. He made every safari drive exciting and interesting, and was always attentive to the group, making us feel comfortable and safe throughout the whole trip. Everything was well coordinated, communication was easy, and the overall experience felt very personal rather than like a standard organized tour. Tanzania was already an incredible destination, but Tony and the team made the experience even better. I would absolutely recommend Big Five Trails to anyone planning a safari in Tanzania, and I would especially recommend asking for Tony as your guide. I would travel with them again without hesitation!

The safari with Antony was amazing. We trusted him our itinerary and it was worth it. In my opinion, the best thing about it was his knowledge and how respectful he is with wildlife. It is amazing finding people that really love their job and show it.
