The best Kilimanjaro route for beginners

You do not need climbing experience to reach the top of Kilimanjaro. What stops most people is altitude, not fitness, and the best protection against altitude is time. So the most important choice for a beginner is not which route, but how many days. Here is how to choose.

Days matter more than the route

The most quoted figures come from Kilimanjaro National Park data from 2006, which is old but still the best public source. They show summit rates of roughly 27% on 5-day climbs, 44% on 6 days, 64% on 7 days and 85% on 8 days. Every extra day gives your body more time to adjust.

Our recommendations for first-time climbers

RouteDaysWhy choose it
Lemosho8Our first choice for beginners: quiet start, beautiful scenery, excellent acclimatisation
Northern Circuit9The longest route and the most time to acclimatise, with very few other climbers
Machame7Popular and scenic, with good climb-high, sleep-low days; busier than Lemosho
Rongai7Gentler, drier north side and quieter trails; good in the rainy months
Marangu6The only route with huts instead of tents, but less time to acclimatise

How fit do you need to be?

You need to walk five to seven hours a day for several days, and one long summit night. Start training eight to twelve weeks before you go:

  • Long hill walks at weekends, building up to five or six hours
  • Walk in the boots you will climb in, carrying a day pack
  • Two or three cardio sessions a week: stairs, cycling, running or swimming
  • Practise walking slowly and steadily: pole pole, as the guides say

Altitude: the real challenge

Mild headaches and poor sleep are normal above 3,500 metres. What matters is telling your guide early. Walk slowly, drink three to four litres of water a day, eat even when you are not hungry, and talk to your doctor about altitude medication before you travel. On our climbs, guides check your oxygen level and pulse every morning and evening.

When to climb

The best months are January to early March and June to October, when the mountain is driest. April and May bring the long rains. Full-moon summit nights are popular, so book these early.
