The Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya are one ecosystem split by a border. The wildebeest do not need passports, so both are superb. The real difference is size, timing and how many other vehicles you will share a sighting with. Here is an honest comparison from a team based in Arusha.
The quick comparison
| Serengeti (Tanzania) | Masai Mara (Kenya) | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | About 14,750 km² | About 1,510 km² reserve, plus conservancies |
| Migration | Herds present most of the year | Usually July to October |
| Calving season | Yes, January to March at Ndutu | No |
| River crossings | Mara River in the north, July to October | Mara River, July to October |
| Crowds | More space, quieter outside the central area | Busy at crossings in peak season |
| Daily fee per adult | About $82.60 including VAT | $200 July to December, $100 January to June |
Size: room to breathe
The Serengeti is roughly ten times the size of the Masai Mara reserve. In practice that means more space between vehicles and a better chance of having a lion pride or a cheetah hunt to yourself, especially in the north, the west and the southern plains.
The Great Migration: where and when
The herds spend most of the year in Tanzania. From about January to March they calve on the short-grass plains around Ndutu. They move through the central and western Serengeti from April to June, then cross into the northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara from about July to October, before returning south with the short rains.
So if you travel between July and October, both work and the river crossings happen on both sides of the border. Outside those months, the Serengeti is where the herds are.
Fees and value
From July 2026 the Masai Mara reserve charges non-resident adults $200 per day from July to December and $100 from January to June. The Serengeti costs about $82.60 per adult per day including VAT, plus a concession fee if you sleep inside the park. Over a three-night stay in peak season, the difference adds up.
What else is on the trip
A Serengeti safari combines naturally with the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire's elephants, Lake Manyara, a Kilimanjaro climb and a Zanzibar beach. A Mara safari pairs well with Amboseli and Nairobi, and is easy to reach on a short flight from Nairobi if you only have a few days.
Our honest verdict
- Choose the Masai Mara for a short trip from Nairobi between July and October
- Choose the Serengeti for calving season, for travel outside July to October, or for more space and fewer vehicles
- Choose the Serengeti if you also want Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar on the same trip
