A private safari in northern Tanzania usually costs between about $300 and $700 per person per day, sharing a vehicle with one other person. Where you land in that range depends on four things: the comfort level of the lodges, the month you travel, how many people share the vehicle, and how many days you spend in the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, where park fees are highest. Here is how the numbers really work, using our own 2027 prices.
What a safari price normally includes
When you compare quotes, make sure they include the same things. Our prices per person include:
- A private 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, and fuel
- Your own professional driver-guide for the whole safari
- Lodges or tented camps on full board while on safari
- All park entry fees, crater fees and government taxes
- Drinking water in the vehicle and airport transfers
International flights, visas, travel insurance, tips and drinks at the lodges are not included in any operator's safari price, so budget for them separately.
Price per person per day by comfort level
These are our average 2027 rates per person per day for a private northern-circuit safari, two people sharing a vehicle. Groups of four or six pay less per person because the vehicle and guide are shared.
| Comfort level | High season | Low season | Group of 6, high season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | about $400 | about $377 | about $304 |
| Mid-range | about $502 | about $439 | about $404 |
| Luxury | about $678 | about $569 | about $576 |
Travelling alone on a private safari costs more, because one person carries the whole cost of the vehicle and guide. If you are solo and on a budget, our shared group safaris start from $250 per person per day.
Park fees: the biggest fixed cost
Park fees are set by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, and every operator pays the same. At the time of writing, the Serengeti costs about $82.60 per adult per 24 hours including VAT, Tarangire and Lake Manyara about $59, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area about $70.80 per person. Going down into the Ngorongoro Crater adds a service fee of about $295 per vehicle. Lodges and camps inside the Serengeti also charge a concession fee of roughly $59 to $71 per person per night.
This is why two nights in the Serengeti cost more than two nights in Tarangire, and why a cheap quote with lots of Serengeti days should make you ask what has been left out. Fees can change each year; we always quote with the current official rates.
