Instead of driving out to the Serengeti, you fly from Arusha in about an hour and are on a game drive by lunchtime. Two nights at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, with its watering hole in front of the pool, are followed by a drive across the plains to the Ngorongoro Crater and a last night on the rim. Who this safari is for

Is this the right safari for you?

This safari is for travellers who want the Serengeti and the crater in five days, with the best hotels and the least time on the road: honeymooners, couples celebrating an anniversary, families with younger children, and busy people combining a safari with business in Tanzania or a beach holiday. If you want more parks, or a lower budget, the 7-day safari covers more ground by road.

We can refine pace, accommodation style, flight logistics, park combinations and beach extensions around your dates, budget and travel rhythm.

Day by day

A journey that builds with rhythm, not rush

Day 1

Arrival in Arusha

Karibu Tanzania. A private transfer takes you from Kilimanjaro Airport to Gran Meliá Arusha, about 50 minutes away, a calm, elegant hotel set in coffee gardens with views of Mount Meru. Your guide meets you there to go through the plan, the flight tomorrow and anything you need. The afternoon is yours: the hotel spa, the pool or a short coffee farm visit.

Where you sleep: Budget: Kibo Palace Hotel · Mid-range: Four Points by Sheraton Arusha · Luxury: Gran Meliá Arusha

Meals: Breakfast

Guide's tip: Order a cup of local Arabica in the hotel lounge. The coffee grown on the slopes of Mount Meru is some of the best in Tanzania.

Day 2

Fly into the Serengeti

After breakfast you transfer to Arusha airport for a light-aircraft flight of about 1 hour 15 minutes to the Seronera airstrip in the heart of the Serengeti. Your guide and Land Cruiser meet you on the airstrip, and your first game drive starts right there. The central Serengeti has the highest density of big cats in the park, so lions, leopards and cheetahs are likely on day one. You arrive at Four Seasons Safari Lodge for lunch and go out again in the late afternoon.

Where you sleep: Budget: Sueños de África Camp · Mid-range: Arukore Simba Camp · Luxury: Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Guide's tip: Request a window seat on the left side of the plane. The view over the Ngorongoro highlands and the crater is unforgettable.

Day 3

Serengeti National Park

A full day in the Serengeti with time to focus on big cats, elephants and the open savannah. Your guide plans a long morning drive and an afternoon drive, with lunch at the lodge or a private bush picnic. The elephants and buffalo that visit the lodge's watering hole mean the safari continues even by the pool. In the evening you can join the lodge's Discovery Centre talk or simply watch the sunset from the deck.

Where you sleep: Budget: Sueños de África Camp · Mid-range: Arukore Simba Camp · Luxury: Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Guide's tip: Ask about a private bush breakfast. It is one of the best ways to start a day in the Serengeti.

Day 4

Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast you drive from the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater, about 3 hours with a game drive on the way out of the park. You descend into the crater for an afternoon game drive, with lion, buffalo, elephant, zebra, wildebeest and the rare black rhino on the crater floor. In the late afternoon you climb back to the rim and check in to Ngorongoro Lodge Meliá Collection, with a fire in the room and a view over the crater.

Where you sleep: Budget: Marera Valley Lodge · Mid-range: Ngorongoro Coffee Lodge · Luxury: Ngorongoro Meliá Lodge

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Guide's tip: If you prefer a full crater day, we can add a night at the rim and descend at dawn the next morning.

Day 5

Departure

After breakfast with a view over the crater, you drive about 3.5 hours back to Arusha and Kilimanjaro Airport for your flight home. A short connecting flight to Zanzibar is an easy way to add a few days on the beach.

Where you sleep: No overnight: transfer to the airport

Meals: Breakfast

Guide's tip: If you want to fly back instead of driving, Lake Manyara airstrip is about 1.5 hours from the crater and has daily flights to Arusha.

An unforgettable Tanzania safari with an incredible guide

Our trip to Tanzania with Big Five Trails was absolutely amazing and exceeded our expectations. The itinerary was very well organized and allowed us to experience some of the most beautiful places in the country, with incredible wildlife sightings and unforgettable landscapes. A huge part of what made the trip so special was our guide, Tony. He was simply incredible: professional, friendly, patient and extremely knowledgeable about the animals, nature and Tanzania. He is also an exceptional tracker — it honestly felt as if he had some kind of direct communication with the animals! He had an incredible ability to spot wildlife from a distance, read tracks and signs, and somehow always seemed to know where the animals were going to appear. Thanks to him, we were able to see an amazing variety of wildlife and enjoy some truly unforgettable encounters. He made every safari drive exciting and interesting, and was always attentive to the group, making us feel comfortable and safe throughout the whole trip. Everything was well coordinated, communication was easy, and the overall experience felt very personal rather than like a standard organized tour. Tanzania was already an incredible destination, but Tony and the team made the experience even better. I would absolutely recommend Big Five Trails to anyone planning a safari in Tanzania, and I would especially recommend asking for Tony as your guide. I would travel with them again without hesitation!

Knowledgeable and very respectful with animals.

The safari with Antony was amazing. We trusted him our itinerary and it was worth it. In my opinion, the best thing about it was his knowledge and how respectful he is with wildlife. It is amazing finding people that really love their job and show it.

It was a unique experience!!

We went on a 5 days Safari in Tanzania. We visit the Serengeti and Ngororo plains, around the Tarangire and Serengeti National Parks & the Ngororo crater. Big boss Antony designed an amazing programme and our guide Peter gave us a unique experience into the wild Africa. His magic eye was able to catch exotic animals, like cheetahs and rhinos, finding the perfect spot in a middle of a vast plain. My only complaint was that I had to go back to work 🤓 Miss you already, guys! What a wonderful adventure !!!

Tony is the Best. 10/10 recommendation plus 5 stars review. He went above and beyond on our trip.

This Past year we visited Tanzania , let me tell you how it went. From the moment our plane touched down, every aspect of our trip was meticulously managed. The airport transfers were seamless, and the selection of hotels and safari lodges provided truly top-tier comfort and amenities. Each accommodation was not only luxurious and well-appointed but also strategically chosen to enhance our overall experience. Tony our guide, consistently went above and beyond to ensure our family felt completely safe, comfortable and well cared for. His extensive knowledge of the wildlife, local culture and terrain was captivating, enriching every game drive and interactions. The entire expedition, from the breathtaking wildlife encounters to the impeccable logistical arrangements, was nothing short of spectacular. We wholeheartedly RECOMMEND Tony and BigfiveTrails to anyone seeking a truly unparalleled and profoundly memorable Tanzanian Safari experience. They deliver excellence in every detail.

A very intelligent, very funny person who loves animals.

The safari experience with Tony is fantastic; he is a highly intelligent and knowledgeable person who loves and respects animals—and he conveys that passion throughout the trip. He is very patient in explaining animal behavior and the surrounding vegetation in great detail, taking the time to point out every little thing. He always keeps a smile on his face, ensuring that everyone in the vehicle is enjoying the safari. His vehicle is comfortable, clean, and equipped with air conditioning. Safaris are great, but with Tony, they are something truly special. We are very grateful to Tony.
